Ahem. Mic check 1. 2. 3.
My life got flip-turned upside down,
And I’d like to take a minute just sit right there,
And tell you how I became the Fresh Prints of K.K.
I’ve always wanted to try my luck being a rapper, but I thought twice about it after seeing how Joaquin Phoenix fared miserably at his own attempt. So that’s how I decided to start PROART, and produce beautiful, colour accurate & archival prints to the masses in Sabah; & beyond.
Some time in May, I received a call from Louis Pang seeking PROART’s services to assist him with his Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards prints. This is one of the strictest photography competitions in the whole world, where they would scrutinise every inch of the submitted prints; and I was ready to take on the challenge to help Louis out. It was also an opportunity to see how PROART would fare with the best printing labs in the whole world!
We had a really tight deadline, as the submission date was 1 week away. We not just had to print the images, but we also had to mount the images on regulation sized boards as stipulated in the APPA entry rules. Most importantly, we had to get it over to Sydney before the due date. I was never one to shy away from tough situations, and I happily took up the challenge.
We chose to use the Hahnemühle Matt FineArt Smooth Photo Rag 308gsm paper for all 4 of his submissions. All prints were printed on PROART’s EPSON Stylus Pro 9900 printer which utilises 10 UltraChrome HDR inks. As with all our print media, we create our own custom profiles to ensure the most accurate output possible. With help from Louis himself on the mounting, we managed to get everything done that afternoon. The prints were then sent thru to the next day and Louis was informed that it arrived with days to spare!

After our bonding session, working on the prints that day, Louis offered to help me out with a portraiture session to help me with PROART’s gallery and print production promotion. I happily took up the offer as I’ve always dreamt of having portraiture shots done by an internationally acclaimed photographer, like Louis himself. So my dream came true, and we got some wonderful shots from that session. Do check out the beautiful (*cough* handsome *cough*) results at Louis’s blog entry here.
If you were wondering how Louis fared in his submissions this year, you can find out more about the results here. Briefly, Louis was awarded two (2) silver with distinction awards, one (1) silver award, and one (1) certificate of attainment. I believe it was a better result for Louis, compared to the previous year.
Hopefully next year, I can assist Louis another time and help him achieve at least a gold award. Apart from that, I hope to see more photographers sending their prints to global competitions, and let their peers critique on their work. They will definitely learn bucketloads from these Masters & Grand Masters of Photography, and that will help them improve their works in future. It’s now up to them to challenge themselves, to get to the next level and beyond. Good luck to you all!
